- Sowing date: 6/12/2019
- Drilling method: Roller Drill
- Sowing rates: 0.5 kg/ha, 0.8 kg/ha, 1.2 kg/ha
The theoretical seeds/m2 is the estimated number of seeds per m2 sown, assuming a thousand seed weight of 3.2 g. The difference between the number of seeds sown and initial plant counts can be accounted for by environmental constraints, causing seedling emergence issues and pests such as slugs, springtail and nysius causing seedling mortality. The subsequent decline in plant numbers over the three plant counts can also be explained by a mixture of insect pressure as well as competition from weeds and/or other swede seedlings causing mortality.
|Drill method||Sowing Rate (kg/ha)||Variety||Theoretical seeds/m2||Jan||May||Average|
|Roller Drill||0.5||Clutha Gold||16||13||13||13|
|Roller Drill||0.8||Clutha Gold||25||27||22||24|
|Roller Drill||1.2||Clutha Gold||36||32||25||28|
The 0.8 kg/ha sowing rate delivered the highest yield of 16,861 kgDM/ha, suggesting this sowing rate was the "sweet spot" for number of bulbs per meter square and total yield in this particular environment.
